Movie - "Munnabhai, MBBS"

The creative script writers of bollywood need to be commended for using very interesting storylines to bring out subtle meanings and philosophy - and at the same time, make sure that the masses are able to get their quota of entertainment, dances and all that. Of course, "The Matrix" leads the pack and is widely discussed. (Some others that I liked are "American Beauty", "Point Break" etc.)

So this movie is a comedy: How a "friendly" mafia don bends the system to join a prestigious medical school (tops the entrance exam) and "manages" to become a topper for the first term. And in the process, he shows to everyone the sweetness of life (allbeit because he has power to show) - the hospital staff, patients and even the doctors. Simple things which involve deep appreciation and simple concepts such as hugging, which have been lost to mechanical living and hopeless systems around us - which require the likely-to-die patient to first fill up forms before getting admitted to hospital!

There are several sequences that I liked. For example, there is a discussion between our hero, and his chela. Our person asks: "Do you know how does it feel when you know that you are going to die, and with every clock tick, you are nearing that time faster and faster?" As usual, the chela (as well as most of janta) don't get the significance of this. Chela describes a situation when he was running wildly to escape from a killer, and had almost come onto grips of death. Perhaps we all have experienced it. But not that - the one where you know you have only a month remaining, and do what you may, there is no turning back. (The young teen character in the movie is about to die of cancer, and this was a response to that.) Of course munna bhai knows what it means to really live. And makes sure that the last moments are indeed sweet for this purpose. This young (and serious guy, who never tried to really explore life) dies in Munna's hands. And that is when it hits him: Do what he may - he can't give life to him. And perhaps he could, if he was indeed a doctor. And that is the key message: Doing a profession just for the sake of it is different. But doing it because there is certain depth and meaning is quite different. Once you love life in all its colors, the self expression takes away all the boredom and the joy takes its place.
